She & Him
I recently got my hands on the M Ward/Zooey Deschanel collaboration She & Him. I’m a very big fan of M Ward so I was a tiny bit disappointed to discover that it’s a lot more she than him (after all, she did do the most of the songwriting), but it was still a delightful stroll down nostalgia lane. Zooey’s smooth vocals lilt over 1950-esque tunes on much of the album.
The highlight for me was when her and Ward sang the simple yet compelling “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” together.
Deschanel also does a western belle version of “I Should Have Known Better” as well as another surprise hidden track cover.
What really got me excited about this album was when I first heard this pairing when they covered “When I Get to the Border,” which beats anything on this album in my book.
